Machine tool orders posted mixed results in July, declining slightly on a monthly basis but recording a large gain compared to a year earlier. Orders were down 5.6 percent from June but up 41.5 percent from July 2020. Orders also were up significantly for the first seven months compared with the same period in 2020.

Additive manufacturing will be part of the disruption of health care, an official of the Mayo Clinic said at RAPID + TCT. “Health care is ripe for disruption,” Mark Wehde, chair of the Mayo Clinic’s Division of Engineering, said during an address at the show.

Boeing Co. "delivered 22 airplanes in August amid revived domestic travel and won orders for seven 787s in a respite for a program hobbled by industrial defects and a halt in deliveries," Reuters reported. The Chicago-based maker of aircraft is working to improve its fortunes as the 737 Max has returned to service in a number of countries.

Additive manufacturing will continue to expand while coping with various challenges, industry consultant Terry Wohlers said at RAPID + TCT 2021. Additive currently is about a $12.8 billion industry, or about 0.1 percent of the global manufacturing economy, according to Wohlers Associates. The consulting company expects that to increase to about $17.7 billion next year and $115.2 billion in 2030.

General Motors Co. extended the shutdown of the plant that builds the company's Chevrolet Bolt TV into mid-October, the Detroit Free Press said. The added downtime "signals that GM and its battery maker, LG Chem, are still working to find a fix for the defects in the batteries that may start fires in the cars," the newspaper reported.
