Manufacturing Expansion Forecast to Continue
Manufacturing’s economic expansion is forecast by the Institute for Supply Management to continue into 2022, the organization said. ISM surveyed executives across 18 industries. Respondents expect gains in revenue and capital expenditures. Those surveyed “are optimistic about overall business prospects for the first half of 2022, with business continuing to expand through the second half, though at slightly lower rates,” an ISM official said.

The continuing computer chip shortage and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will slow down the auto industry’s recovery, forecasting company IHS Markit said in a presentation. The industry “can sell what we make,” Colin Couchman, executive director, global light vehicle forecasting for IHS Markit, said in a webinar. “We can only make what we have the parts for.”

Machine tool orders in October soared compared with a year earlier, AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology said. October 2021 orders were up 50 percent from the same period a year earlier. Also, AMT said orders for the August through October period were the highest in 23 years.

Power management company Eaton announced a $4.9 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce the cost and complexity of deploying direct-current (DC) fast electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Under the three-year program, Eaton will develop and demonstrate a novel, compact and turnkey solution for DC fast-charging infrastructure.

The new generation of steel permits “more elongation,” John Catterall, vice president, automotive market for the American Iron and Steel Institute, said in an interview. “You can now stamp more complex parts. That maybe allows you to be more cost-effective.”

Boeing Co. has an ambitious plan “to unify sprawling design, production and airline services operations under a single digital ecosystem” in as little as two years, Reuters reported. The news service said that “the overarching goals of improving quality and safety have taken on greater urgency and significance as the company tackles multiple threats.”
