Manufacturing Still Hums; Busy Auto Industry
Manufacturing remained at strong operating levels in September while coping with significant challenges, the Institute for Supply Management said. The Tempe, Ariz.-based group's manufacturing index, known as the PMI, edged up to 61.1 percent last month from 59.9 percent in August. It was the 16th straight month of manufacturing economic expansion. Still, manufacturers are coping with labor shortages and high raw material prices.

Durable goods orders increased in August thanks to a surge in orders for commercial aircraft, the U.S. Commerce Department reported. Orders gained 1.8 percent to $263.5 billion in August from the month before. That followed a 0.5 percent rise in July. Orders have risen 15 of the past 16 months.

Boeing Co. said a 737 Max test flight for China's aviation regulator was a success, according to a Reuters report. The aircraft maker said it hopes that China will lift a two-year grounding of the aircraft later this year. The 737 Max has returned to service in major markets while China remains an important exception. The 737 Max originally was grounded in 2019 after two fatal crashes.
